Hawaii 2013: The West Coast

The West Coast of Hawaii is not all just beaches and snorkelling. There’s lots of culture, shopping, and beautiful flowers, too. And you can’t forget the delicious Hawaiian fusion cuisine!

YellowHibiscus
The yellow hibiscus, called the pua aloalo, is the state flower of Hawaii. (Interestingly, the national flower of South Korea is a pink Hibiscus)

Plumeria2
Plumerias are native to South and Central America, but are ubiquitous on the Western part of the Big Island. They also grow very well in San Diego and several of my neighbors have beautiful plumeria trees.

floating worlds
These lilies were found in a pond at the Queen’s Marketplace in Waikoloa — graced by beautiful koi. Makes me think of ukiyo-e or the floating world of Tokugawa Japan….

Kona_side_Coast
The land down to the sea on the Kona side. The last eruption of the Volcano Hualalai was in the 1700s, but in the dry conditions on the west coast, lava takes a long time to break down into soil. This is the view along the coast from Kona back to Waikoloa

LemonGrass_Waikoloa_SambalBeef
Sambal Beef from Lemongrass Express, an eatery in the Queen’s Marketplace food court. Despite it’s humble location, the quality of its food put higher end restaurants to shame!

Lemongrass_OrangeChicken_Waikoloa
The Orange Chicken from Lemongrass Express… this dish was so awesome, we ordered it 2 days in a row! We forgot to photograph the banana-mango lumpia with coconut ice cream — which was to die for!

Waikoloa_ThreePigs_PorkBelly
The Pork Belly from The Three Fat Pigs at the King’s Market in Waikoloa. It was tasty, but the portion was a bit small for the price.

Waikoloa_ThreePigs_CatchODay
I had the catch of the day at The Three Fat Pigs. Delicious!

Ippy_Waikoloa_GarlicShrimpSalad
The Garlic Shrimp salad from Ippy’s Hawaiian BBQ in the Queen’s Marketplace food court. High on flavor, fair on price. We actually enjoyed this place more than the more high-brow Three Pigs… but I suppose we are not upper-class folks…
