One of the tours offered by the conference was to a silk factory. I really wanted to see some of the process of making silk and was hoping to see artisans in action. There was a presentation on silk production, from egg to strand, but no working artists.
The process from egg to cocoon happens relatively quickly, within a couple weeks. The silkworm eats voraciously, and molts 4 times before spinning its cocoon. The species has been domesticated for so long, the adults can no longer fly.
